Beatriz, by Carissa Cruz-Evangelista, is an international brand that marries the art of colorful handcrafted luxury with the heart of social responsibility. Known for its colorful graphic thread clutches that have caught the eye of Oprah magazine, Saks.com, the Museum of Modern Art and ModaOperandi.com, Beaatriz has ventured into another colourful medium with its Painted Ladies Collection and Color Pop collection, working with individual up and coming Filipino artists and an artists communities in Angono, Rizal in the Philippines. Angono is best known as the Art Capital of the Philippines, being the hometown of the country’s National Artist for visual arts, Carlos “Botong” Francisco and the Angono Petroglyphs, the oldest known work of art in the country.
The Painted Ladies collection features the limited edition work of Art Masters Buds Convovar, Mary Rose Gisbert, Salvador “Buddy’ Ching, Franklin Cana, and Nida Cranbourne painted on hard clutches. Buds Convovar has won many prestigious awards worldwide and is known for his mixed media, three dimensional artworks. Mary Rose gisbert is an art educator who teaches art therapy for special children and is known for her abstract impressionism. Salvador “Buddy” Ching is a visual installation and performance artist and is known for his work using vintage photography and silk screen. Franklin Cana, hailed for his kaleidescope of beautiful shapes and figures and is also from the famous Malang family of artists. Nina Cranbourne’s whimsical flowers and creations never fail to delight in the local art scene.
The Color Pop collection, inspired by Jason Pollock, an American painter known for his Abstract Expressionist Art, features the work of an artists community in Angono, Rizal. In Angono, established painters work with junior artists and student painters who apprentice to learn and master their craft. As these junior artists seek to to create a name for themselves, they also need a way to support how they live and pursue their passions. Beatriz sought to work with these artists to create the Color Pop Collection of spatter designs using different colors of acrylic paint and pylon paint on white or black backgrounds to create the fun, vibrant clutches that are perfect accents to ladies LBDs (Little Black Dresses) or LWDs (Little White Dresses). Each bag brings out the colourful artist in each person. Each spatter design is unique and no two bags will ever be alike, as each bag was made by individual artists with unique temperaments, talents and stories.
Beatriz seeks to work with more artists, artisans and livelihood communities. “We are constantly on the look out for talented designers and craftsmen that we can work with,” Carissa, the chief designer said. “Please get in touch with us if you are a designer or artisan and would like to collaborate with us.”
